Matrix

nonstop traffic
three o’clock pm
everything i need is
behind that one door i can’t
open; i watch the cars
zooming past wishing i could be one
the coolness of metal
instead of the fragility of flesh;
emotions would be moot,
and i wouldn’t need to rely on anyone
they’d all depend on me —
don’t want to suffer the fools
or a reason why;
i want a stainless steel road stretching into
the sky, no sentiments need to weigh
me down and no restraints;
flip the switch to automatic, i want control —
lies breeze through the airwaves,
white flakes flowing through the eaves
concrete jungle falling inward on itself, the world
shrieks for justice while providing nothing
but crime; whispers of banality become the loudest
frequency transmitted, i sit and sip
on sprite as cars in cruise control head toward the bar,
because alcohol at three is easier than a job,
i want to forget the world
and swallow a pill that takes me into the matrix
because reality has jaded me past the point
of return.
